Owning a UTV can be a game changer for your workflow or for your weekend adventures! Sometimes you’ll need to take your UTV further than it can drive, though. Knowing how to safely haul your vehicle to different locations can make your ownership experience even better.
Hauling Methods
Luckily you have a few options when it comes to transporting your UTV from one place to another. It mostly depends on the size of your UTV and the tow vehicle you are using.
Pickup Bed
The first option for hauling is to load directly into your pickup truck. You’ll need to know the specifications of your UTV and your truck bed before you decide to go this route. You want to be sure the width and length of your UTV can easily be accommodated by the size of your bed.
To load directly into your truck bed, you’ll need ramps! You’ll want to create an angle with the ramps that isn’t too steep so you can wheel the vehicle up. You might also want to use a winch instead of manpower to make the task a bit easier.
Trailer
In some scenarios your UTV will not safely fit in your truck bed. So, instead, you can use a trailer! Utility trailers and enclosed cargo trailers are great options for this. Some are even designed with built-in ramps to make the loading and unloading process easier. If this is the right option for you, you’ll need to double check your vehicle’s towing capacity and consider looking for a specific UTV/ATV trailer.
With a Camper
Another popular way to haul your UTV is with your RV! Models like toy haulers, for example, are built to carry powersports vehicles during travel. You could also tow your UTV on a specific trailer behind a motorhome.
Securing the UTV
Once you’ve determined how you’d like to haul your UTV, it’s time to start thinking about how you’ll secure it. Each model may have slightly different anchoring points, but generally you want to make sure the wheels are locked in place and the vehicle can’t shift too much. You can use bungee cords or ratchet straps.
If you’re hauling your UTV in a truck bed, make sure to find strong anchors in the bed itself. Many truck beds have specific indentations and points for straps and cords.
On a trailer, you may need to install D-rings or additional tie-down points for more security.
Driving
When you haul a UTV, you may need to slightly adjust your driving style. Give yourself more space between other vehicles and anticipate stops sooner. Whether you’re using a trailer or just a pickup bed, you’ll need to be aware of turns and curves!
